Faculty of Fine Arts, University of Porto, 28-30 January 2015

Arts-Based Research and Artistic Research are controversial and sometimes contradictory territories that intersect between scientific research and artistic practice. The 1st and 2nd editions of this Conference on Arts-Based Research and Artistic Research took place in Barcelona (http://hdl.handle.net/2445/45264) and in Granada (http://art2investigacion-en.weebly.com/full-papers.html) and brought decisive progress in the field.

The 3rd edition will be held in Porto, at the Faculty of Fine Arts, and will be drawn as a place to move the arguments on arts-based research and artistic research away from an exclusive focus on its legitimacy. It is time to engage decisively with what is being done, discussing concrete examples of doctoral research and artistic practice understood as research, in order to clear the meaning of research in and within the arts. What kind of knowledge is being produced and in what ways can it be discussed? What may be and what may be not Arts Based Research and Artistic Research?

We invite PhD researchers, artist researchers, and researchers that deal with the problems of arts based and artistic research, to present their work in the format of a 15 min paper presentation, or as a specific question to be discussed in a group or in a research workshop to be developed. Question formats will enable conversation circles as emergent working processes in the conference.

The Conference will be organized in 2 formats:

a) Papers: In this format each participant will have 15 minutes to present his/her paper to the group, followed by a general discussion by the participants in the room.

b) Conversation Circles: This format intends to offer a dialogical strategy to communicate research in small discussion groups. The presenters will prepare a short presentation with one main question they want to discuss in the group. The presentation must be short (7 minutes maximum), clear and concise to introduce the question and why the question is relevant.

The papers and the proposals for the conversation circles must address the theme of the conference and reveal a deep knowledge of the field in which the arts based or artistic research being presented is inscribed.

- Abstracts for paper proposals should not exceed 500 words (excluding references) and should clearly communicate the key points and conclusions of the paper, indicating the methodology, theoretical framework and the relationship to the call.

- Proposals for conversation circles should not exceed 500 words (excluding references) and should identify: the question, it's relevance in the field, and the empirical evidence and theoretical framework on which this question is based.
